Kristine’s Levaquin and Cipro poisoning.

Kristine’s Story

There is no way to describe how this has changed my life.  What these drugs did to my body is just horrific.I went from a being a woman with a  urinary tract infection to a woman with upwards of 65 different symtomologies, unable to take care of my family, myself.   I truly feel that I am here because I somehow in the middle of complete horror found the courage to totally take my health into my own hands.  What this has cost my family.. I could even begin to place a dollar amount on that…this shook us to the core…my children watching me cry uncontrollably, watching me crawl up our front walkway determined to get one bag of groceries into the house when the pain was too much to bare, not being able to carry around my youngest child who was just a nine month old baby when I was given the 1st Quinolone, watching the tears stream down my husbands face as we drove around Boston trying to find a doctor to help us…him begging me to hold on and me begging him to never let our children forget me……….the tens of thousands of dollars that this cost us are nothing compared to what we have been through because of these drugs and the cover up of their toxicity.
I have had to work 24/7 for every bit of health that I have gotten back.  My recovery has been a long hard journey but I am eternally grateful for every bit of it.  Every day is about health in my family now and every moment is fully lived.  I have spoken at alternative health conferences about the my story…my journey to wellness and my husband and I continue to speak to any group or individual that expresses interest.  Every day we will work to help as many people as possible so that no one else will suffer that great horror of the quinolones. The horror of quinolone antibiotics

I was prescribed Cipro (ciprofloxacin) about two years ago prior to surgery for a minor infection on my back. The amount I was given was 1500 mg once a day for seven days… About two weeks later I began having very intense panic attacks for no apparent reason. Over the next few months they became more intense and more frequent and many times lasted most of the day.

This emotional state became a major problem especially at work. I remember on one occasion I was having a meeting with my boss concerning a work issue, and how I’ve been feeling and all of a sudden and I began weeping uncontrollably. This was not only something that has never happened to me before, it was extremely embarrassing. On another occasion I had to leave work due to the onset another unexpected panic.

Over the next few months I was unable to come to work due to these panic attacks on many occasions. As a result I used a lot of my allotted sick days and was on the verge of depleting all that I had. Had I used all of my available sick days I would have been put in a non-pay status. Knowing this I decided to retire, which I was eligible to do, but had not planned on doing right away; but no one in my office knows the real reason I was retiring.

Another medical issue that I began to experience about the same time as the panic attacks was I started to have numbness in both of my feet for no apparent reason, as well as pain in both ankles. To find out what the problem might be I made an appointment with a Neurologist and he did nerve conductivity test on me. It indicated that I have pinched nerves in both my ankles. Another Doctor indicated that I have plantar fasciitis. In addition to the above I developed chronic gastrointestinal problems, which I still have, and in the winter of 2012 I lost 35 pounds in about three weeks.

Finally, I began experiencing vision problems. I’ve been diagnosed by a retina specialist with what is called Vitreous Detachment. What happens is that the vitreous membrane separates from the retina. It is first noticed when flashes of light appear in you peripheral vision. The main issue is that it creates numerous eye “floaters” in your vision. I have it in both eyes. My left eye has numerous large floaters as well as a veil like substance that blurs and “darkens” my vision. I did not have this problem until I took Cipro. Additionally I was told by my retina specialist that Vitreous Detachment often precedes retinal detachment.

To sum up, I am taking Valium to control the panic attacks, as well as an anti-depressant. At this point I have not gotten any relief from the foot numbness or the gastrointestinal problems.

I feel that the Cipro was the cause of all these psychological and physiological aliments that I’m experiencing. Unfortunately no Doctor will attest to this, and I cannot find an attorney to take my case against the Bayer Company who developed the antibiotic years ago to treat Anthrax. Then when the Anthrax scare calmed down, so as not to lose revenue, but to make millions, the Bayer Company convinced the general medical community that this was now the antibiotic of choice for any kind of infection, and it is still dispensed widely. Bottom line…the good health that I’ve been blessed with for so many years is gone.

I don’t know for a fact that Cipro caused my fibromyalgia. I just know that I was like a different person before it. I was skinny as a rail (now I’m borderline fat); could eat any food under the sun (now I have a long list of food sensitivities); I was a high energy person with massive stores of energy and worked out all of the time (now I get tired being on my feet for any length of time and just doing basic household chores–and I don’t even work!).

I also have a long list of annoying and distressing symptoms like facial migraines, stomach problems, breathlessness, etc. The worst are the fatigue and breathlessness.

Of course I would be upset if I knew that Cipro caused my illness, but it would upset me even MORE if they know that it can do this but they keep it quiet so they can continue to prescribe it to others. No one should have to go through this.

Funny thing is, I was worried about Cipro before the surgery I had and my doctor insisted that he’d used it for years and it was the only antibiotic he was willing to use post-surgery.
