It took decades for this warning to finally appear on the quinolones. The warning label is a Black Box warning on Quinolones for tendon pain and tendon rupture. I wish they would have added one for all of the neurological adverse effects. I think these side effects outnumber all of the tendon disorders. Hopefully future warnings will appear about the devastating central nervous system effects.
Finally a Black Box warning on Levaquin and other quinolones

So far this is a small step in the right direction. The FDA has ordered the makers of Quinolones to place boxed warnings on their FQ products BUT…. that doesn’t necessarily mean that it will get done. The makers could still appeal this and stall the process for years to come. Also, the warning is still only about the same old tendon rupture issue. There are many other ADR’s that are much more serious and devastating including CNS problems that were not included and need to be. I think this is a cop-out by the FDA and once again they are not doing their job to fully protect the public from these dangers. At this point in time, there still is no box warning on these toxic and extremely dangerous drugs.
Sadly, I doubt that there ever will be a box warning at the rate this could drag on in the courts…but I’m still hopeful that it does happen eventually.
I certainly agree more needs to be done. I won’t be satisfied until every american is given his/her right to make a fully INFORMED decision about taking these drugs.
I have been given over 76 Levaquin tablets since 2000- 2007, and since that time I have had shoulder/arm tendon pain. In June of 2007, I tore a tendon in my left foot, a very unusual tear the ortho Dr. stated, instead of an horizontal tear, mine torn vertically. I have suffered so much in the past 7 years, and when asking my Dr. about the side effects of levaquin, she just laughed and said” All drugs have side effects.” I can barely walk, always in pain, and the Dr’s do not want to blame it on Levaquin. I wish I could get my life back before I started taking Levaquin, and to tell the rest of the world, do not take Levaquin, your life will never be the same.
